In addition to his work as a professional hip-hop producer/bomb dropper, Swizz Beatz is the producer-in-residence at NYU, a loving husband and devoted father, and a taxpayer with a less-than-stellar track record.
Now, as Complex.com points out, Beatz (born Kasseem Dean) may have another title to add to his resume: CEO of Megaupload. As of this moment, Beatz is listed as CEO on Megaupload’s website.
The shocking revelation comes as Beatz’s work with the uploading site has gotten several of his superstar friends, mainly Kanye West, will.i.am and Diddy, in legal trouble.
As New York Post‘s Page Six reports, West, willi.i.am, and Diddy were among the stars who appeared in a recent “Mega Song” promotional video at the request of Beatz (who has collaborated with all three in the past).
Their shared label, Universal Music Group, then issued a “take-down notice” to YouTube, claiming the appearances were not authorized. Megaupload countered with a lawsuit, claiming in a public statement, “We have never received any word that any artist has [individually] filed a take-down . . . [we have] legally binding agreements with the performers that appear in the video… They promised that they had the rights to enter into that agreement and it’s not interfering with any third-party rights.”
