After The-Dream announced a few months that he was leaving Def Jam recordings to bring his signature brand of R&B elsewhere, rumors began circulating that the hit-maker would be relocating to frequent collaborator Jay-Z's Roc Nation imprint. While those talks have seemingly subsided, speculation has now been made that the singer/songwriter has already signed with Capitol Records as his latest iTunes single, "Black," has been credited to the label's copyright. Capitol has recently acquired the newly-independent 50 Cent as well.
In 2011, The-Dream released his fourth album 1977 for free after label delays resulted in his IV Play LP losing its release date. The project was ultimately re-released commercially by the label with added bonus tracks. IV Play would then be released in 2013 to critical acclaim but only modest commercial success. The-Dream has yet to confirm a reason as to why he left the label in the first place.
