9th African Economic Forum: Africa Reclaiming Africa
This year's theme of the African Economic Forum was 'Africa Reclaiming Africa: Changing The Rules of Engagement'. The African continent is emerging from a history of being tied to foreign aid and ruled by exploitative elites. Recently the pattern was broken by a new generation of leaders and policy makers who are pushing for self-sufficiency. As a result of this transformation, Africans have become more vocal, innovative and entrepreneurial. Results include fast socio-economic improvement and economic growth fueled by local enterprises. Africans in the Diaspora are returning home in large numbers, and at a faster pace, to participate in this movement. Africa is reclaiming Africa, and the African Economic Forum is focusing on the professionals, entrepreneurs, and financiers who are making this happen.
The African Economic Forum was initiated in 2004 and has grown to be the largest Africa-focused event at Columbia University with over 500 participants last year. The Forum brings together current students, alumni, faculty and the professional business community. The event is organized by the Columbia Business School, Columbia Law School and the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA).
